In
1955 Tullamore Musical and
Dramatic Society evolved from the local Dramatic
Society in the town called the Local Lights. The
first two productions "Trial by Jury" and the
"Pirates of Penzance" were presented in the Grand
Central Cinema (now Fergies).
In 1957 the "Geisha" was
performed in the County Ballroom in the Courthouse
which was destroyed by fire the following year.
The Society then moved to St. Mary`s Parochial
Hall and changed its name to St. Mary`s Musical
Society and remained at this venue from
1958 to 1974.
The year
1973 will be remembered for a
special performance of "Mozart`s Coronation Mass"
in the old Church of the Assumption. In
1976 we moved to the Bridge House and we
changed our name to Tullamore Musical Society.
This venue was to be our home for fifteen years.
In 1991 we moved to the Social Centre Auditorium
and remained there for ten years. We moved to our
present venue in 2001.
Our Society stages one show each year. To
supplement the financing of our production we
organise fund raising events. At Christmas we
organise Carol Singing around the town, this
enables us to make a donation to the local St.
Vincent de Paul.
 Over
the past 51 years, our Society has entertained
audiences with excellent productions. Our aim is
always to achieve the highest standards possible,
and we have been rewarded with the many
nominations and awards we received from the
Association of Irish Musical Societies.
The well known local journalist and former AIMS
adjudicator Mr. Geoff Oakley has written a book 50
Golden Years A History of the Society to celebrate
our 50th Anniversary. The Special Committee
commissioned to oversee this project were Brian
Gunning, Frank Nicholson and Tim Quinlan. |
