Tullamore Musical Society

ABOUT

‘A Musical & Dramatic Society has been established’ published the  Midland Tribune Nov. 27th 1954, succeeding ’The Local Lights’ drama and variety group which ran from 1942 - 1954. Prior to debuting their first show, this newly established society decided to test the waters with a Grand Concert. This historic preliminary performance took place on April 12th, 1955 and continued for two further nights. The Gilbert and Sullivan short opera ‘Trial By Jury’ was chosen for their debut performance and was staged in the Grand Central Cinema on 20th and 21st May, 1955.

On May 26th, 1957 as the curtains closed on ‘The Geisha’ it was the final curtain call for the name ‘Tullamore Musical and Dramatic Society’. In its place arose ‘St. Mary’s Choral Society’. As there was no official production in 1958 it was not until January 1959 that the local papers hailed the birth of a ‘new’ musical society.

The name ‘Tullamore Musical Society’ came into existence in 1980 and has been in use ever since. Over the past 65 years, we have overcome difficult financial times, difficulty in securing a venue and the ever growing pressures that come with producing a show of high calibre. We have endeavoured to provide a place where creativity and talent can flourish and an escapism from everyday life for our audiences who continue to support us.

Since 1972, we have been fortunate enough to enjoy success at AIMS, as the standard of our productions continue to grow. Over the past 65 years, we have entertained, formed great friendships and significantly shaped the arts and culture in Tullamore Town. From our very first show ‘Trial By Jury’ in 1955 to ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ in 2019, we have endeavoured provide a high standard of musical theatre to people in Tullamore and throughout the midlands.

Thank you for your continued support of Tullamore Musical Society.
